There was a campaign going to put pressure on Sealord as their parent company Nissui was a part owner of Kyodo Senpaku, a company directly involved with whaling.

Cue generic form letter...

Dear Jimmy

Thank you for taking the time to email us expressing your concern that one of Sealord’s shareholder’s, Nissui, held shares in Kyodo Senpaku, a company which supplies vessels for the Japanese Government’s whaling programme.

We can now inform you that Nissui has announced it is withdrawing from ownership of Kyodo Senpaku and will also cease the processing and distribution of whale meat in Japan.

Sealord welcomes this decision. We made known to Nissui the significant opposition to whaling by large numbers of New Zealanders, Australians and their respective governments, as well as from people internationally.

Sealord is not, and never has been, involved in whaling in any way. It is a New Zealand based company and half-owned by the Maori people of New Zealand.

We believe that Greenpeace should now do the right thing and bring to an end their misdirected action against Sealord.

We hope, in light of this important development, that you are able to put your concerns to rest about Sealord and this issue and any action you might have planned against Sealord is at an end.

Thank you

So basically instead of using this opportunity to put some real pressure on the companies involved, Sealord has left its balls on the ground and gone running...

FUCK SEALORD.

Make sure you wash afterwards otherwise you'll smell.

Exactly.

I'm working at Greenpeace these days, and have just spent the last 6 weeks harrassing Sealord and trying to convince them to do something helpful - specifically to put pressure on their parent company (Nissui) to get them all out of whaling.
Instead, Nissui took the easy way out by getting rid of their shares in Kyodo Senpaku and giving all their machinary for canning whale meat to the Janapese govt - from this angle it looks a lot like swapping names around on paper.

It's a hollow victory because while it's a pat on the back for consumer pressure, basically it means that whaling will go on as usual because the whaling industry has been nationalised and there are now less leverage points for anyone outside Japan to use.

So I'm on the case of the International Whaling Commission now...
