Quote: Eruption keeps rescuers from missing man
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/20 ... 594781.htmBy New Zealand correspondent Peter Lewis Five survivors of a volcanic eruption on a remote New Zealand island are on their way back to the mainland but no trace of a sixth man missing since the eruption has been found. Steam, ash and mud has been thrown out of the volcano in the first eruption on Raoul Island, about 1,000 kilometres north-east of Auckland, in more than 40 years. The missing man was among a group of scientists from New Zealand's Conservation Department on the island. The 30-year-old had been taking water temperature readings from the island's crater lake when the volcano erupted. He has not been seen since. "Two staff went to investigate the area where the missing person was thought to be and they found that the track was impassable and further volcanic activity occurred and they retreated," department spokeswoman Liz Maire said. His five colleagues raised the alarm and a rescue helicopter retrieved them safely late this afternoon. Vulcanologists had detected signs the volcano was stirring in recent days. Like I'm sorry for the family but..... so the wee machines they I assume they were monitoring didn't give him a clue NOT to go down to the water? Do they train these dudes? Gapp has afew funny stories he might share..... EDIT:Ok just found this page and it makes it worse..... Quote:
Eruption strands NZ scientists
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/20 ... 594571.htmA dramatic long-range rescue is under way in the Pacific after a volcanic eruption on an island north-east of New Zealand. At least one person is missing after the eruption on Raoul Island, about 700 kilometres north-east of Auckland. Steam, ash and mud has been thrown out of the volcano in the first eruption on the island in more than 40 years. Six workers from New Zealand's Department of Conservation are stationed on the island. Department area manager Rolien Elliot says one of them has gone missing during a routine mission to check the water temperature of a lake this morning and remains unaccounted for. A rescue helicopter is on its way to the island to evacuate the stranded survivors. "We are monitoring the situation closely, with the safety of the staff being our top priority," Mr Elliot said. The eruption follows a strong sequence of earthquakes since Sunday night. The scientists were on the island to monitor the temperature of water in the craters and track impending eruptions. New Zealand Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences spokesman says this morning's eruption "seems to have occurred with no immediate warning". - ABC/AFP Quote: The eruption follows a strong sequence of earthquakes since Sunday night.

I have heard geological or seismic scientists saying (through the press at least) there is no 'causation' between earthquake type activity and volcanic eruption..... but fuck, everytime I have heard anything about Ruapehu blowing smoke or whatever else, it has definately coincided with a bunch of small shakes ... 'causation' maybe not (hard to prove I guess)... but 'correlation', I would say most definately, anyone with half a brain would put the warning lights on right?.... and it is funny cos scientists are often looking for 'correlation' then assume 'causation' (this actually happens all the time, alot in Agriculture/Agronomy for modelling field work etc very statistical based science some of this stuff... boring if u ask me), so yeah they be fucked in the head.... or covering their arses or someone else is covering their arses, or something else lol. ok funny story about DOC..... told Rob a little while ago.... I have no respect for most of what DOC is or their so called expertise at least.... one example is that I saw the NZ native fish expert on the telly talking about eels, and I knew more about their migration than she did, and I simply worked in an eel processing plant for 8 summers with other bogans and rednecks..... they like to try and pretend they know shit about clay..... anyways getting onto the funny story..... a friend of mine did her degree in Zoology and other bio based science, left Massey then wanted to go wrok for DOC..... she was a little bit of a hippy girl that wanted to make a positive effect on the environment. Well as she soon found out, volunteering is sometimes the only way into the organisation, and you make your way up the ladder. The rate at which she went up the ladder was a little quicker than some other of her peers. She was based on Kapiti Island, and it turns out she was required to spread her legs in order to do well within the DOC frame work. She was nieve enough when she joined to actually be fooled by this. turns out the guy that was shagging her was happily married with kids somewhere on the mainland, and my friend was pretty heart broken when she found out. Last I heard, she was still working for DOC though, somewhere in the south island and doing pretty well. Apparently, this sort of thing happens more regularly in DOC than one would think. |
