pretty cool idea

Halo 3, Gears of war, vista and xbox on "xbox" live, some cool things on the horizon

oh, and more pre rendered "in game" footage from sony, and new features that seem strikingly similar to key features in Wii and 360 ZZZzzz

It will be worth it if more games support it eh. The thing is its another thing you need to spend $ on if it becomes standard. Christ soon you'll need 2 gpus and a physics card just to run games without having them running like turd!

On the xbox/play station thing, do I detect some brand loyalty going on:P

Yeah a little bit, I guess I'm MS bitch, but it'll make a nice companion to the media centre

Plus sony piss me off, especially Sony BMG - idiots

Fair enough! I don't really trust either of them eh.

Its sucks cos if you want the Japanese style RPGs and stuff you have to get Sony,
and if you want western and/or PC style or ported games you need a xbox.

I guess Nintendo do some of each but more Japanese styles really I guess.

So as usual I'll end up forking out for both. Bastards.

With the PS3 the whole level/angle sensitive control pad thing is kinda novel, but it will screw with lying down on your side on the couch!edit: also I think it will probably cause alot of wrist rsi/carpal tunnel with all the swivling and shit, making it bad if you play the guitar or do the other thing.............................................................................bass.

The thing I don't like the idea of with the 360 is the whole HAL look alike thing, which will scare the hell out of me if I am abit medicated I reckon, sorta get me worring if its corrupting my game saves to spite me in its machine maddness....or perhaps I have an overactive imagination :?

Hahaha!

I reakon (read hope) that all this next-gen console feuding will finally give the pc a good kick in the arse to raise the game a bit... it's been pretty cosy for the pc for a while with titles like F.E.A.R standing out to really stay ahead so hopefully with next gen being able to compete graphically on the same playing field the PC will bust out some hXc new tech, and fingers x'd some decent VR type interface.

It would be unstoppable with things like 'Crysis' with the CryENGINE2 - http://www.filecloud.com/files/file.php?file_id=2769

and 'Cellfactor - Combat Training' which has been developed to fully utilise the Ageia PhysX chipset - http://gameover.files.sapo.pt/CellFactor_TrailerNew.exe

PC's ( and PC games) are always gonna be more versatile and modable with user made content, but the hardware costs to achieve a similar visual yumminess in comparison to these next-gen consols is really to high for the average person/family. Also with the whole fucking 'hi I'm windows and I am here to crash your games so you end up destroying your monitor' type problems, I think consoles are bitter-sweetly the future.

But the whole TES IV:Oblivion downloadable content fiasco on the TES boards just shows what the mass marketed-almost dualopoly console market is doing to previously very open community/developer relationships.

Because (aparently) if your game is on the 360 you must have downloadable content available for PURCHASE from LIVE. This means that the previously plug-ins for Morrowind (TES III) now cost $ for Oblivion. Afew US dollars for 5meg for instance, some are like $3 for like a meg or someshit ( which was two sets of armour for your horse ).
Considering the game is what 4.6gig or so @ around $80AUS, a couple of dollars for afew meg is a HUGE ripoff! But they can't really go charge the 360 owners and not the PC owners, imagine the outcry!

There is lots more to this story-such as places are mentioned in the game, you are suggested to go their, only to find the door and its not openable. Why? You must BUY an extra plug in of 5meg for $1 or $2US. Fucking stupid. It goes on and on but this post is long enough.

I just hope this doesn't set the future of extra content. The poor 360 Oblivion players are stuck with the restrictions of official content only while becuase of the mod tools the PC players are able to freely make and distribute a great selection and huge amout of user made mods and other content.

Thats why even though my card/chip may struggle playing the game I am happy, I can really get my moneys worth.

Rant over.I hope lol

Yeah I'm not to clued up as far as MMORPG's go but I guess thats always been the thing why console < PC as far as copying goes... because Sony and M$ can restrict how content is delivered they can control it more.

It's kinda like the delema the music industry is facing whereby they are having to make the actual purchase of albums attractable again. The packaging for Tool's new album is a fine example, I mean you can't exactly download it for free now can you?

I haven't heard about that new Tool album, I have heard of it, but not the packaging. I'll have to look it up.

The other thing is if the PC dissapears ( I'm sure it won't in any hurry) the lack of small, independant game developers, bedroom or company variety will make the industry stagnate. The cost for releasing a console game is insane from what I've heard, and we'll be stuck with tired wateredown franchise games from the likes of EA lacking any really revolutionary concepts. They won't risk it. :-(

I think that the whole open thing of PC games means that if I was a serious gamer, I'd never move to console (I'm not - I don't have time to be a gamer anymore). Being utterly reliant on the big corps for your content is fucken lame to say the least. With a PC, if the big game corps start being too lame, some new company will step up and steal their market. On a console, a new company that will shake things up too much just doesn't get a license to develop on that console.

Not to mention how rad PC user communities are. For example, I understand more people play the Capture the Flag Quake modification than Quake itself.

I believe the cost of a ps2 'developing' machine i.e what you write ps2 games on is about US$30k.. and EA are single handedly destroying the games market!

Counterstrike, as gay as it is is the perfect example of how a garage-made mod can redefine the industry!

Yeh the PS2 dev kit costs a shitload and is a bastard to develop against by all accounts, to the point that Sony got a bunch of people to go on record saying that the PS3 one was much better (even though they'd only had it a month or so at the time)

especially compared to xbox, which you can develop on with a PC

Yeah, with those sort of costs their is no way small independent developers can develop games, and as Snuff pointed out, our good friends at EA will have the run of the scene.

I hate Steam on my PC but it IS a good way around distribution costs for small developers etc. If only they could have made it less disrupting to your PC and internet connection it would be great.
